Project
Management: a guide to Microsoft Project
Most people, whether they realise it or not, manage projects. A project is any activity having a specific objective, a definite life, and a finite resource budget. Apart from major activities like building an office block or putting a person on the moon, projects include more mundane things like giving a dinner party, getting married, or organising a scout camp. Many business activities can be considered to be projects. These include advertising and marketing a new product, moving into a new office, running a conference, and implementing a new computer system. This book is aimed not so much at the full-time professional project manager as at the person who makes use of project management techniques to perform any one of a number of varied activities. After introducing general project management concepts, this text concentrates on examining the use of project management software, and in particular Microsoft Project, to assist with the management of projects of various types. It should be remembered that management is a human activity, and that in this respect project management is no different. Project management software provides useful tools to assist with effective project planning, monitoring and control. It is, however, only useful in assisting the project manager and can never become a substitute for good management skills. Unless the project manager understands the dynamics of projects and the variety of interactions of humans project team members, interpreting the results shown by the software will be impossible.
